President Emmerson Mnangagwa has urged all Zimbabweans to be vaccinated citing that the ‘safe’ antidote is the country’s weaponry against coronavirus pandemic.
The country’s president announced that he will also get vaccinated.
Zimbabwe procured the COVID-19 vaccine from a Chinese firm, Sinopharm, and is expecting more from Russia, the United Kingdom, and India. He said:
The vaccine is safe and an effective antidote against Covid19 and indeed part of our weaponry in fighting the virus. All of us including myself will get vaccinated, so should you, my dear Zimbabweans if we are to protect ourselves and families.
Some members of the public are reluctant to take the vaccine which they say was not tested enough to see if it is safe for human beings.
The president speaks when Vice President Constantino Chiwenga who is also the minister of Health and Child Care has since been vaccinated.
Whilst the vaccination is voluntary, Zimbabwe seeks to achieve herd immunity or community immunity, which is when a large part of the population of an area is immune to a specific disease.
If enough people are resistant to the cause of a disease, such as a coronavirus, then it has nowhere to go.
