Nigeria Denied US Operation Without Its Consent – Minister

The Minister of Defence, Major-General Bashir Magashi (rtd), said that the United States operation mission in Nigeria was done with the consent of Nigeria.

Last week there was information that the US government sent its special forces to rescue its citizen Philip Walton, who was kept hostage by the Boko Haram rebels. It was said, he was kidnapped in the southern Niger Republic before moved to northern Nigeria.

According to the Minster, the United States of America did contact the Nigerian government to grant her the opportunity to rescue her citizen. “This was known to us and we granted them the permission”.

However, Nigerians have criticized the mission, saying that, the mission was carried out in the shadow. This tells how the weakness and failure of Nigerian security intelligence to know what comes in and goes out of the country.

The minister said, there was nothing of such, and there is no issue with a government wanting to rescue it citizen from a country, as this is also part of diplomatic ties you share with you allies.

He stressed that Nigeria is making effort to strengthen military technology through the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) in Kaduna. This is being done through partnerships with other countries.
