Cricket has joined football as the other sport to officially return with the Elite cricket league taking center stage.

The three-team franchise T20 competition started with Royal Varsani Bucks edging Mamba Challengers by three runs at the Lugogo cricket oval in Kampala.

Mamba Challengers started on the bat and stopped at 107/9 in their allotted 20 overs.

During the second innings, Frank Akankwasa was imperious with 44 runs including 4-6’s and 2-4’s off 24 balls. His contribution was supplemented by Simon Ssesazi and Robinson Obuya on 36 and 26 runs respectively.

But Royal Varsani’s performance in this game will be more remembered for the man-of-the-match display by Siraje Nsubuga who secured four wickets at the loss of just nine runs.

The second game of the day needed the Duckworth-Lewis method to be decided as an eight-run win for Royal Varsani over the Aziz Damani Scorpions.

With the former chasing 132 runs and at 85 runs in 13 overs, poor light due to bad weather led to the abandonment.

The competition whose players are housed in a bio-bubble at a secret Kampala location continues on Monday till Saturday when the top two from the quad-round robin will play the final whose winner will walk with a hefty cash prize.
