All the candidates of the 17 political parties contesting the October 10 governorship election in Ondo State have signed the peace accord today October 6, 2020, at Akure. This was organized by the National Peace Committee (NPC).
This came with urgency as there is the need to sue for peace before the election day, which will serve as a guiding principle towards a peaceful election. Those present are the Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar Sa’adu, Bishop of Sokoto, and Founder of the Kukah Center, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan.
Others present are, INEC Chairman Prof Yakub Mahmud, Deputy Inspector General Adeleye Oyebade, HRH Fredrick Akinrunta, and Former Head of State, Gen Abdulsalam Abubakar,
Bishop Kukah during his speech congratulates Nigeria on its 60th anniversary as a nation. He recognized the responsibility of INEC and stated that “you cannot lead everybody with one hand, for that reason everyone is a member of INEC. Therefore, we are shoulder with the responsibility towards a great nation”.
He congratulates the people of Edo State over the just concluded election, he hopes that all that they do will bring long peace to the people and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The Sultan of Sokoto in his speech acknowledged the effort of the National Peace Committee for contributing to the peaceful election in Nigeria since 2019. Also, he laid emphasis on the need for all aspirants to know that power belongs to God, therefore, they must not see it as a zero-sum game.
He called on the people of Ondo State, especially the youth not to allow themselves to be used to instigate violence. Finally, “Nothing can be achieved without peace”.
The peace accord was finally signed by all candidates present as they await October 10 to know their fate on who occupies the government house in the next four years.
